amiskwaciwâskahikan (beaver hills house) is the nêhiyawewin name for Edmonton. The North Saskatchewan River valley continues to be a place of refuge, and to provide rich resources for survival.
The area is the historical gathering place, travel route, and traditional territory of Indigenous Peoples including the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, Dene, and Nakota Sioux. We are located within Treaty No. 6, but live, work, love, and create across Indigenous territories including Treaty No. 7, Treaty No. 8, Treaty No. 4, and across Turtle Island through networked connections and communication flows. We support, and aim to walk alongside, Indigenous struggle and Indigenous sovereignty.
The Edmonton Anarchist Bookfair Collective aims to demonstrate solidarity with Indigenous peoples and to uphold our responsibility as Treaty people. As part of this solidarity relationship, we name colonialism, capitalism, and state power as forces that obstruct our aims for justice. These struggles of resistance have a long history. Colonialism today is not disconnected from the past but is connected to the present through the ongoing attempt to remove Indigenous peoples from their lands, whether unceded or shared through treaties, and undermine the sovereignty and authority of traditional Indigenous self-governance systems and lifeways.
